History of the Royal Gaekwad Family of Vadodara

Growing up in a family with such a strong history is incredible, but what makes my upbringing special is how I was raised to be independent and confident. My family has always been known for their progressive leadership and deep appreciation for art, music, and architecture. We’ve been lucky to have supported and worked with some of the greatest minds who shaped modern India, like Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Raja Ravi Varma, and even Dadasaheb Phalke. This sense of culture and vision has always been a part of who we are.

Our dynasty’s story started in the early 18th century when Pilaji Rao Gaekwad established control over Baroda. Since then, we’ve been known for leadership, social reform, and turning Baroda into a center for education and culture. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, especially, was a visionary. He promoted education for women, built schools, hospitals, and libraries, and was a huge supporter of the arts. Growing up with these stories, I’ve felt a responsibility to carry forward those values of progress and inclusivity.

One of the most amazing parts of our family’s legacy is Laxmi Vilas Palace, where we live. Built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890, it’s this massive palace that’s four times the size of Buckingham Palace. It blends Indian, Islamic, and European architecture, with domes, stained glass windows, and the grand Durbar Hall with its Venetian mosaic floors and Belgian glass chandeliers. The palace is filled with art from all over, including pieces by Raja Ravi Varma, which is just so inspiring to be around.

The palace also has beautiful gardens and a golf course. One of my favorite spots is the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, which houses so much valuable art. Growing up surrounded by all this history and culture has shaped who I am and my love for the arts.

Today, my dad, Maharaja Samarjit Gaekwad, leads the family and works hard to preserve our heritage and the palace itself. My mom, Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad, is active in heritage conservation and women’s empowerment, which I think is so amazing and inspiring. Together, they’re keeping our family’s legacy alive in a way that’s meaningful and forward-thinking.

As a part of this royal family with so much history, I was raised to be confident and independent, while also understanding the importance of tradition. It’s about carrying forward our heritage while adapting to modern changes while staying connected to the community.
